wagon charging issues

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, after a long battle with my ignition system I finally got my wagon running but its not charging. I bought a new alternator and voltage regulator because they were both bad. I have also checked to see if my dash bulbs were good because I saw on another post that could also cause charging issues. I replaced two but it still no charge. I have no idea what the problem could so so I would really appreciate some help here.

Thanks

That's true. The IGN circuit energizes both the coil and the alternator.

Time to start measuring voltage.

* With key ON engine OFF is there 12V at the back of the alternator at the F connection?

* With key OFF, is there 12V at the alternator A/BAT terminal?

* Is there 12V between alternator E terminal and battery POS terminal?

Only the CHG bulb needs to be working for it to charge.

How do you know they were bad if you replaced them and it still doesn't charge?

ck your fuses in the fuse box make sure they good. soemtimes they can look good but are broke at the ends.

what was this battle with the ignition system. IM sure the ignition routes 12volts to energise the field in the alternator.

It looks like all the fuses are good. The ignition battle was that I pretty much had to replace everything. New coil, new distributor and all the wiring was a mess. I followed the diagrams I found here on ratsun to hook everything up.

There is 8V to the F connector with the key on

12V to the A terminal with key off.

12V between POS terminal and E

I got the alternator checked at the auto part store and it was bad. The voltage regulator I bought because I assumed it was bad. I can always return it.

Checking the fuses with a circuit tester lead I think I discovered a short. When I touched the flasher fuse terminal with horn terminal I heard a crack on the starter I believe. :hmm:
