love_my_gt
I'm looking to see what the average gas mileage is for the 4x4 as opposed to the 2wd. any info would be greatly appreciated. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
It's a lot worse * Steeper gears * Richer jetting * Wider tires = more drag * Taller vehicle = more drag on highway * Weighs more = more fuel Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Also more losses through a transfer case. By far the biggest loss is the constant extra weight. It takes energy in the form of gas to accelerate a mass up to speed or lift up a hill, no way around that. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Hahahahahah.....gas mileage in a 4x4. whew that was a good one. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
On 2,800 mike drives to Ontario I used to get 28 mpg. By the time I had the SAS and transfer case in, big tires blah, blah, blah it was just over 20 and this is with a terrible 4.11 diff. Terrible combination Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Here's numbers from actual measurement: 1990 Nissan Axxess 2WD: 19/24 4WD: 17/22 That's 10% penalty. It's even worse on the pickups for various reasons listed above. Quote Link to comment
