datzenmike
My guess is detonation (pinging) caused that. The pistons look like they are OK. The valve seat in the head looks ruined. If the compression on the other cylinders was OK, I would change the head and keep running it. The above, and look for an L20B and 5 speed for later. Quote Link to comment
kinetict
Just bought a rebuild a14 .040 bored over with a h89 head. How do i figure out how much power motors should have? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
For Datsun motors, ask here. For A-series engines, the head is the limiting factor. the H89 head is good for a peak of 83 NET SAE HP in stock form. Doesn't matter if you put an A12 or an A15 on it. Same peak power is possible. The 1mm overbore (0.040 inch) will give you a little bit more torque than a stock A14, but same peak HP. To make more HP you need to either port the head, change the camshaft or rev higher. Preferably all three or you'll get a peaky torque curve. Or you could go with higher compression -- going from stock 9:1 to 10:1 will give about 2% more power, or about 1.6 HP additional. The great thing about compression is it raises the HP at all engine speeds and all throttle openings. so the effect is better than it sounds. All the other changes add HP at certain ranges only (usually at higher RPMs/higher throttle openings). Quote Link to comment
