This can't be right..

This is my 73 620 with an engine out of an early 70's 510. I've had to redo the harness,and don't have a lot to go by. I used the FSM,and I know how to read a schematic.I hooked up the battery for the first time today,and when I touched the cable to the ground side,it sparked and I could hear the starter motor. I did NOT leave it on very long.

Is this backwards,or am I missing something?

Black wire goes where the red wire is now. The red wire looks like the start signal from the key and (should be black/yellow stripe) goes to the small terminal in between.

Thanks,Mike I hoped you would see this. The black wire is the positive. Both cables are black. The red wire was already on the starter when I got it. How do I fasten it to the middle?

Take the red wire off. It doesn't belong.

 

The black goes where the red is.

 

The wire plugged into the red goes to the spade terminal on top.

I took it out to get a better look. Looks like part of it is broken off.

I'm stoked right now,This engine hasn't run in 10 years,and the truck hasn't moved under it's own power in 4 years. It cranks,and the lights work. Tomorrow I'm putting a little gas in it and see what happens.
