budsaipan
I need to replace the gasket on the rear main cap and I was wondering if there is any different between the 2 piece vs 1 peice. Also can I remove just the rear main cap to change the gasket and bolt it back or is the crankshaft going to be outbalanced? Quote Link to comment

Skib
one piece, you wont regret it. L series skib, you should know that he provided no info with his post, so I dont assume. for an L motor the rear main seal is one piece but theres two rubber/metal strips that go in the side of the main cap as well Quote Link to comment
Sealik
Ya...you need to remove the cap to apply some RTV...in the corners and the bottom of the side seal channels. Slather side seals (1 piece) and pound in. There will be about 1mm sticking up (after bottoming out), which needs to be trimmed flush. I loosened all bolts as per specs...then removed the rear...installed side seals/cap and re-torqued (sequence/specs) all to 40 lbs. I did that because I was not sure what the previous 'owner' torqued them at. Quote Link to comment
Sealik
Also...clean the channels out prior and carefully pound the side seals in. The 1 piece have a tendency to separate (the metal inside the rubber) if the channel is 'compromised'. Once that happens...pretty much impossible to set it. EDIT Also....take note on the position of the rear cap, it's supposed to be flush with the back of the block. If it's not....I would keep it in the same position, if the bearings are not new. Here's a simple way to remove the cap....without beating on it. Pops straight out. Quote Link to comment
budsaipan
Sorry Skib. I was talking about l20b. So would it be okay if I removed the rear cap and install it back without taking the rest out? I ask because I know theres a sequence in removing/installing the caps. Quote Link to comment

Those go towards the block, if one side is larger than the other,... install that side toward block. Coat with gasket sealer...tap them in gently. Tap the steel shims in between the cap and seal. If one side is beveled, put this towards cap. Small screwdriver to tap shims as far as possible Trim".... Quote Link to comment
