Dirk Diggler
A buddy of mine has a 73 510 that hes having problems with. When starting off in 1st, he has to feather the clutch to keep the car from dying. If he lets it out like normal it will bog down and die, so he has to keep it partially engaged until he is going fast enough, and it still bogs down. There are no problems in the other gears, and other than that the car runs and accelerates without any issues. The carb has been rebuilt and cleaned, it has a new gas tank, new lines, new fuel filter, new fuel pump, and new air filter. Weve tried cleaning and adjusting the carb but with no luck, any ideas? Hes running the stock L16 with stock carb and stock everything Quote Link to comment
DISLEXICDIME
Timing? Did you check the distributor? Is it point's ? Are the brakes sticking at all? Quote Link to comment
Dirk Diggler
I cant remember if he switched to EI or if he is still running points. Timing is good, brakes are brand new. Ill make sure to check out the points (if he has them) tomorrow Quote Link to comment
68Datsun510
Verify the timing with a gun, dont assume. I switched to EI waaaay back in my 68 510 and thought it was good, but it had exactly the same symptoms. Timing turned out to be way retarded Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The brakes wouldn't drag only in first gear i would think. If you look down the carb, engine off, and work the throttle do you see a very strong squirt of fuel into the primary barrel?? Quote Link to comment
Dirk Diggler
We've done the gun already. Carb is getting plenty of fuel. It was rebuilt, then rebuilt again when the problem first started. Then it was cleaned multiple times. If we can't figure it out soon its going to a shop, I just want to make sure we haven't skipped anything Quote Link to comment
68Datsun510
vacuum leaks, too-lean idle mix? bad coil? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well take a good look at the distributor cap and wires, rotor and the coil. Look for cracks or carbon tracking on the cap and on the coil. Carbon tracking is where spark has jumped along the surface of the insulator and left a path. Once tracked it easier to jump the next time. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
best to tell us if anything have been changed. If point ignition it better have a point resisitance coil and use the ballast resisitor. ck the point gap if points. If that Ok and try cleaning the idle jet. If it idles with out feathering the clutch then idle jet is OK. stock carbs I can never rebuild them right as they have to many small parts aand I dont trust myself. A weber should be in the upgrade. Pesonally most autoplaces suck. be better to go where a alot of the Mexican mechanis hang. they are good with older cars esp Datsun/VWs are they work on carbs alot more than these newer techs. Dirk Diggler
No vac leaks. It does have an EI. Carbs are adjusted correctly. Its going to an Austin healey/mg/alfa Romeo specialist that knows a lot about datsuns so I'm not worried about it Quote Link to comment

Dirk Diggler
Auto correct on my phone added the s at the end and suggested are instead of is because of a plural word. Damn phones are getting too smart. It has a single carb. Quote Link to comment
