Chris#51EPGraham
71 510 SCCA EP auto-x car, $1500 OBO. Located in Maryland. >>>Flickr thumbnail page of this car <<< 71 510 4 door SCCA E Prepared autocross car, street driveable. Ex-CA car with minimal rust, semi-stripped and painted Krylon white inside/ Banner Red outside. It's been sitting in the garage too long now to still call it turnkey since I seldom start it. Has Pertronix ignition. Ran fine when I turned in plates in Sept 2008, now leaks some coolant from the water pump. There would be a delay in getting the title because the the Maryland MVA "sends the title by mail" (e.g. never sends it the first time) in order to collect the fee twice. The title snafu + tirekickers is why I took it off the market before. If it doesn't sell fast in one piece it's getting parted out. The car was street driven for about 3 1/2 years until the end of Sept. 2008. It is not registered and insured now and cannot be test driven beyond up and down my short driveway. I generally took it on 60-70 mile race outings, but used it as a daily driver in 2008. It was driven to and back from 28 autocrosses without ever breaking down. The car was registered as a street rod under Maryland's very liberal laws for that category. I cannot guarantee that it's street legal in any other state. I don't own a trailer and cannot deliver or ship it. Chris#51EPGraham
Now $1500. I don't even have time to part out much of it, so most of it goes to a salvage yard whose owners don't sell stuff here. I'm very close to losing the house I've long owned free-and-clear over property taxes, and god forbid that anyone who interviews me would actually hire me with sooooo many to choose from. This car has about a week to live. Link to comment
touz
damn!!! what it badly! just too far away!! because I'm in Quebec, Canada so bad! Link to comment
datrod
This makes me want to cry. :( Sorry that you have to sell it. I would love to buy it but I'm in the same shape your in. Link to comment
fisch
Sorry to hear this Chris! Kinda sad how many programs are out there to help people restructure their mortgages, but no help for folks who already own their homes. Wish I could snag this from you. Still shocked it hasn't sold for a straight east coast 510. Link to comment

I would love to buy it but I'm in the same shape your in. I'm sorry - I thought you were doing ok with your machine shop and everything. Not that I'd expect to sell a whole car to someone out in CA. Strange thing is that there are so few 510's here, and everybody wants one but nobody will actually buy the few that ever come up FS. I've got a damned good 10 x 24 Logan cabinet lathe and a decent Taiwanese Edelstaal milling machine FS too if anyone's interested. Link to comment

Still shocked it hasn't sold for a straight east coast 510. I gave up for a while. Down here it just ended up being a pointless exercise in show and tell. Making Home Affordable proved to so inneffective that many who sought help were actually harmed by it. It never even occurred to congress that the economy would get worse and stay that way (e.g. "the new normal"). It also never occurred to them to include property tax situations of any kind. Chris#51EPGraham
damn!!! what it badly! just too far away!! because I'm in Quebec, Canada so bad! Dude, at the border Quebec is only about 500 miles from here. Nothing is ever any closer than that nowadays. Almost all parts I sell are getting shipped 2500 - 3000 miles. I had a guy drive 1000 miles up here from Orlando FLA for a load of 510 body parts. I'm about to ship a windshield and back glass to Texas. Link to comment
fisch
I gave up for a while. Down here it just ended up being a pointless exercise in show and tell. I actually wound up buying a 510 out of Maine. It is the second daily driver capable 510 I have seen for sale in New England in 3 or 4 years. And the price on mine, including delivery and reinstalling the things I needed to pass inspection, was too good to pass up. The few others that have come up are usually lawn art. I was really into the gray Bre stripe ex Turbo Tom car that is now for sale in NYC I believe, but couldn't get the 4K needed. The price of your dime is the most affordable way to get into a 510 on the east coast that I have seen, for something that is not totally rotted out. It is a steal of a deal. I wonder, if you had the stuff to turn it back into a well-mannered (at least in appearance) daily driver- street wheels, back seat, bumpers, possible carpet etc, it might sell better. (Maybe removing the cage, though that'd be a shame.) But who knows. All I can think is it is the race car aspect that is throwing people off. In this economy, I am guessing the market for a 'track toy' Datsun has shrunk. Personally I think it looks badass as is. But if someone is looking for a classic to daily, and they are married, and the choice is between a bare bones racer, or a car with vintage creature comforts, the wife will push them to the comforts in a heartbeat. I pray this car doesn't get scraped! (What would the salvageyard give you for it?) Link to comment
70bird
There's a bluebird on the east coast in virginia I think it has alot of rust but it's complete and driveable. He has an add in the classified section on the 510 realm. Just FYI for anyone on the east coast with rust repair skills it would be a great cat. Link to comment
Chris#51EPGraham
I actually wound up buying a 510 out of Maine..... That car's engine + my body shell + a lot of work would add up to a very good car. I was really into the gray Bre stripe ex Turbo Tom car that is now for sale in NYC I believe, but couldn't get the 4K needed. That's another very nice car that's now being parted out. I dropped the price from $2500 to $1500 OBO. There's no way I'm gonna convert it back to a stock myself on spec when good running stock 510's won't sell for a fair price either. All these changes are everyday DIY projects that can be done by the buyer, after he buys it. I can't afford to jump through hoops when I'm about to lose everything I own - does anyone grasp that concept? It includes street wheels/tires, but just steel, nothing special. I have a stock dash for it, generally nice but with the usual cracked dash pad and no radio. The cage is only a bolt-in rear section that's easily removed. I don't have a stock back seat or driver's seat that I know of - I may, but if I do it's buried. I pray this car doesn't get scraped! (What would the salvageyard give you for it?) I'll never tell. They buy, and I get money versus a goon squad throwing all my stuff away. Link to comment
fisch
I agree Chris, and feel your frustration! Totally 100% understandable. I am wishing you the best. (I didn't realize the Turbo Tom car was getting parted. Strange Datsun days indeed on the east coast!) Just wait, the new Transformers movie will be coming out with a Datsun 510 in a staring roll, and everyone will be like "WTB Datsun 510" on craigslist. But too little too late I am afraid. Chris#51EPGraham
Uh, there really isn't a category that seems appropos for machine tools, but there are more than a few machinists or aspiring machinists around here. This is a link to new Flickr thumbnail page for my lathe and milling machine, which are also for sale: Edelstaal milling machine and Logan 10x24 model 1875 QC cabinet lathe. Both machines are much loved, much worked on, used this past week and turn key. Lathe $1100 OBO Milling machine $550 OBO Link to comment

AZhitman
Free bump. Chris, if I had a way to get it here, I'd gladly give you the $1500, if only to help a Datsun brother out. Link to comment
Chris#51EPGraham
Thanks AZhitman! I actually have tentative discussions underway with several people, but you know how tough and iffy things are these days. Ironically, once I sell this and the other two shells I'll be a Datsun parts brotha with no actual cars. If I can save my house from the tax thugs and sell it, I should look for a 720-ish camper. saifa
Could you please PM me your ZIP so I can have TFX work out a freight quote. So whats the story with the title? Seann PS What are these other two shells you mention in your last post. Link to comment
hitch
If someone in TN,NC,SC,GA (I-20 North),or AL (Birmingham North)buys the car. I'll pick it up and bring it to you (My Schedule) if you pay for gas and the U-Haul rental. Someone needs to buy this car and save all datsun's from salvage. 2 Link to comment
fisch
Hot damn this deal got even better! You rock for stepping up with this offer Hitch! Would someone need to rent a U-haul truck too, or just a trailer? Link to comment
hitch
Probably about $160 for the U-Haul trailer, and $50-$100 for gas. I'll tow it with my truck. 1 Link to comment
Chris#51EPGraham
The title situation is as follows: when you register and retitle a car in Maryland, they ostensibly send you the title in the mail. They don't print and give it to you in person at the MVA window like they do in most states. I registered and insured and drove this car on the street for 3 years, 2005 to 2008. The Maryland MVA simply failed to ever send me the title in the mail, and I forgot to micromanage that situation as it was happening in March 2005. They also did this to me on a 68 Dodge A100 van I briefly registered and drove - never sent the title. That one was worth so little that I decided not to bother with the MVA when I discovered the missing title. The 510 was a street rod registration; the A100 van was an antique registration. The mailed title procedure is common to all cars I've ever registered in Maryland, including two regular registrations. In the other two cases they did mail the title. There is a duplicate title process I can do at the MVA web site or in person. I know I should get the title in advance. Poverty is the reason why I haven't. I'm working on getting it done in advance, but I'm up also against numerous other problems caused by extreme poverty versus exorbitant MD state taxes and fees. Link to comment
