Big Pip
I am looking at purchasing an 83 280 ZX but wanted to know what to expect and the difference between it and a regular Z car. Anybody Know? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Define "regular Z car". They changed several times over the years. An '83 ZX is a second-generation Z. 1st Gen was '70-78 (S30 chassis, 240Z from 70-73, 260Z in '74, 280Z from 75-78), second generation was '79-83 (S31 chassis, all were 280ZX), 3rd Generation was '84-89 (Z31, 300ZX). So, all 1983 "Z" cars are 280ZXs. There were variants, such as the 2+2 and the ZX Turbo, but you didn't say if this was any of those. Quote Link to comment
kiznook
actually the 280ZX is a S130 chassis code. the 260-280z's were S31 IIRC 70?-78 - S30/S31 (240z, 260z, 280z) 79-83 - S130 (280zx) 84-89 - Z31 (300zx) 90-97? - Z32 (300zx) 00?-present - Z33 (350z) Bleach will be along shortly to clear this all up :D Quote Link to comment
Bleach
:D 1970-78 is S30 1979-83 is S130 there is no S31... you're thinking of the Z31. 2003-2008 is the Z33! That's a regular Z-car :) The 280ZX vs the 280Z is just a different look mostly. The 280ZX is wider, longer, more areodynamic, has t-tops, ect. A 1983 will most likely have all options on it. Power steering, windows, locks, mirrors, voice warning system, better electrical system. Still has the same engine and transmission though. 2.8L inline six with fuel injection. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Uh-oh, And they say you don't tug on Superman's cape You don't spit into the wind You don't pull the mask off an 'ole Lone Ranger And you don't mess around with Jim Quote Link to comment
kiznook
"The Japanese market cars changed from the 'S30' model code to 'S31' in late 1975." http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=239842 They do exist! but I was wrong (damn quick searching) Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Yeah, I typed it without looking. S130, not S31. My head always equates the Z31 as being a minor change from the prior S chassis when it's far more substantial. One of the issues of never having owned one of those. I had a POS '77 Z, nothing else. The 280ZX always says "right door is open" or "left door is open" :D nothing is a jar  Quote Link to comment
Big Pip
I know the early Maxima would say -the door is ajar... Quote Link to comment
makya
Nope. I had an 83 280 zx. white, t-tops, red interior, full power, VERY nice factory stereo. The Works. one thing I remember was that I took it to the Dealer to have the door switch fixed because she kept telling me "The Door Is A Jar" and my friend who rode with me thought it was hilarious. I did have an 86 300zx also, but she didn't talk, she was just "dingy" Quote Link to comment
Bleach
strange that there would be two versions of the voice box. Nobody that I have ever talked to that has had Z's had one that said "ajar" My 82 Z and 84 Maxima both had left and right voice warning. Quote Link to comment
kiznook
original design- "hey lets put in a voice box to tell you when the door is open, let it say the door is ajar" a few months later- "These dumbfucks don't know what ajar means and won't stop complaining or yelling at their cars. Let's make it easy on them, and while were at it, let it specify WHICH door is open" Quote Link to comment
makya
Bleach, that is odd, Mine didn't say left or right, just said it was ajar. kisnook-:fu: Quote Link to comment
