Datsuns are designed to operate at +- 200 F water temperature with other internal parts at a higher but relative temperature to that. This is where they run the best. Efficiency, power, emissions, longevity. If your Datsun won't run without overheating then you have a cooling problem. 1940s and 50s cars ran 160 thermostats because they ran shitty oil that wasn't up to protecting the crappy metals available back then.

You should be able to drive the Mojave desert at noon with the air on if your cooling system is working. Putting a 160 in is not fixing the problem. Two things: Assuming engine is in good condition, tune and the head gasket is NOT blown.

Poor air flow through the rad...

Are the fins blocked with dirt or debris? Is there a plastic bag stuck to it? Leaves?

Is your grill clear to allow air flow? No fog lights in the way?

Is your fan belt loose? Is it glazed and slipping?

If clutch fan is it firm to turn by hand or loose? Are the blades damaged?

Do you have the fan shroud on?

Is there open space around the rad top, sides or bottom where air can get past without going through it? Does hood close snug against the top of the rad support?

Poor water flow....

Is the water pump faulty?

Are the hoses soft? The lower return side can collapse from the suction at high revs.

Look inside at the vertical cooling fins. Is there a build up of scale that will restrict flow?

Has the block drain bungs been removed and flushed out to remove sediment?

Have you checked the anti freeze/coolant and changed it in the last 2 years?

There should be a small coolant line from the thermostat housing going down to the lower rad hose inlet to circulate hot engine water past the closed thermostat when engine is warming up. Without it there will be a long delay between when the engine reaches operating temperature and when the thermostat starts to open.

The heater core has no effect on the cooling system operation. When shut off there is no flow through the core. In a pinch when overheating you can turn it on full to draw off some of the engine heat.
