herculesinwyoming
and then it actually worked out great? i decided today was the day to fix the crushed in roof on my truck ( some kids at one time jumped on the roof), i was planing to have to replace the whole roof panel, so i figured what the heck, i grabbed my big sledge hammer and using it sideways i gave the roof a few good taps from the inside, 95 percent of the dent popped out. also a giant chunk of bondo came along with it lol. Now i have hopes of being able to save it with just some gentle body work. Quote Link to comment
74datsun620
Sow your not going to repace the roof now? Quote Link to comment
herculesinwyoming
no i think it is going to be fine like it is, looks like the bondo was caked on there trying to fill a hole that had been drilled for a cb antenna or such, i am going back out to sand on it and get it cleaned up so i can see if it is good enough to fix. 74datsun620
Thats good it should speed up the restoration if you don't have to replace the roof. Quote Link to comment
pharouh
Good deal! For a minute there I thought this was about one of my old girlfriends. :D Quote Link to comment
herculesinwyoming
Good deal! For a minute there I thought this was about one of my old girlfriends. :D lol yeah it will take some work to get it right, but it beats having to try replaceing the whole roof. Days like this bring back the excitement in fixing up a old rig, it gets discourageing some times its a bit wavy, i primed it in spots because i had it down to bare metal in spots Quote Link to comment
pharouh
Get some basic body tools if you don't already have them. Important thing is to take your time. Use as little bondo as you can. But you probably knew that. ;) Good luck! Quote Link to comment
herculesinwyoming
i have hammers and dollies, i just need a good sander, or grinder. i also have torch available to add heat if and when needed. i wish i had a before picture, it was so crushed in it would have 2 or 3 inch deep puddle on the roof it it rained Quote Link to comment
pharouh
Damn kids ,not respecting a Datsun. They could've jumped on a Prius and no one would care... Quote Link to comment

hang_510
as a kid ~4, got busted for caving in the nieghbors roof on his porsche. youll be much happier fixing than replacing. as i get more into how mine was replaced, im thinking they shoulda scrapped it. first use of the shocker surprised to hear that you liked it! herculesinwyoming
i am learning that bondo made for some lazy autobody guys back in the day, and it is no fun to remove. i found old roof damage that they tried to repair with out taking the time to remove the headliner and do right, instead they tried useing a puller from the outside, leaving about ten holes and then just caked on the bondo, i have found it almost half in thick. i was able to fix the job they didnt do right, just has been a pain. herculesinwyoming
:o that shit is still happening today!!! i feel your pain... all the vibrations from sanding/grinding i learned quick, heat from a heat gun or a torch and a putty knife, the stuff just turns to putty. scrapes right off Quote Link to comment
yellowdatsun
Last time I tried something like that I laid on the seat and pushed the roof out with my feet. Worked surprisingly well. Quote Link to comment
