Unless your exhaust manifold is cracked anyway, I'd leave it stock. I put one on my '71 521 expecting an improvement, ANYTHING!! What I got was a lesson on how to remove the torsion bar and motor mount to get it into the engine bay, total PITA getting the old one out (lower mounting bolts) and new one in (lower mounting bolts), noticeably noisier in the cab, destroyed a perfectly good down pipe, and the header to pipe flange kept leaking, (the bolts came loose ) there was no warm air for the carb, and in six months it was rusty as hell.

The stock L16 manifold is as good as a header. Don't waste your time, money and sanity trying to prove it isn't. If there was any improvement, it was so small, as to be unnoticeable. There is no way I will ever do this again. End rant.
