BoostinBen
My Roomate has had this 1984 Mercedes parked out in front of our house for the last year .. the trans went out in it and he has done nothing about trying to fix it or get it out of here.. In fact some time ago it got red flagged by the city for being out there so it made its way into the bushes on the side of my house so it was off the street. Im always bugging him to get rid of it .. he said he was going to donate it... then someone wanted it then blah blah blah the stupid thing has been out there forever... so the other day I said to him what if I fix it? he said if you fix it you can have it but I doubt its worth your while.. so I said ... Its ON... the next day I went out there and fired it up.. It fired right up and seemed to run like a champ.. its only got 170k on the ticker .. not mch for these motors.. but it had no forward gears ... only reverse.. I drove it around the block in reverse then parked it. Went inside and did some research.. turns out that in these cars that issue is somewhat common and is caused by a actuator in the trans called the B2 piston, it enguages the #2 band in the trans for gears 1 and 2. So I find some info on changin the B2 out .. its not the easiest thing to do in the world but it can be done without pulling the trans if some finesse is applied. So first things first get at the B2 to see if its damaged. Here I am Day one Inspection of the B2 piston Quote Link to comment

BoostinBen
thx ... Update .. Day 2 Removal of B2 Piston Removed And the verdict is..... ... ...... ......... Exploded B2 Piston (it should all be one piece) ... good news... this is definetly the cause of the car not going into forward gears... Quote Link to comment
Dguy210
Make sure you change out the inner seal, they have a updated part as this is sort of a known defect. See below, hope this helps. Part Numbers Follow: B2 Piston J3040-14314 (should fit all 722.3/4/5 so 107 270 04 32) (http://catalog.worldpac.com/mercedes...tion=000010389 Plastic Brake band Bushing J3031-16563 (126 277 08 50) http://catalog.worldpac.com/mercedes...e+Band+Bushing Other parts you will need, inner rubber lip seal (seats against the bushing), also a real pain to pull. 006 997 73 47 This is not available from here, I was able to reuse mine, but I ordered another from Monument Auto (Livermore) probably need a dealer for this most of the time. Outer Rubber ring for the cover (I believe 005 997 70 48) mine was undamaged when I first changed the piston, but it should probably be replaced. Good links. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...d.php?t=135055 http://web.archive.org/web/200410260...s/b2piston.htm Part Numbers for a w124 (722.358) these should be the same, and this link has several nice pics. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=109035 Quote Link to comment
