I just scored a engine for $70 bucks with a 5 speed tranny engine looks in good shape and looks like its off a fresh rebuild. It says sr20 on the side. What did these come out of? I know lots of people have swapped them into 510's and 620's so someone has got to have some info. How much horse power do they have? What mods are needed to install in a 620? thank you

SR20DE and SR20De

The Nissan SR20DE engine is used in over 15 Nissan models. It first appeared in October 1989 and has been gradually phased out since the introduction of the QR (low-emissions) engine family. The SR20DE carried nominal power ratings between 140 to 145 Horsepower (104 to 108 Kw) from the factory. The design was very responsive to aftermarket improvements and became a favorite among compact sports car enthusiasts during its operational life especially as it revved very high. (redline @ 7500rpm)

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

* SR - Engine Code

* 20 - 2.0 Litres

* D - Dual Overhead Cam

* E - Electronic Fuel Injection

* e - SR20DE LEV-version

* RR - Roller rocker motor

This engine has the following specs according to a SAE paper released in 1991

The shape of the valve cover looks like it is a S14 SR20

It also could be a S15 SR20,,, but in that condition it is probably a S14

Looks like a non-turbo..... deinately not a FWD motor..... so a good score Gage!!! nice JDM RWD SR20DE

For what it stakes to drop in, the fab and time. I would just rebuild or drop in another l20b. It's a great score don't get me wrong, but 130tq @ 4800 rpm doesn't warrant the effort imho.

it will take alot of work and money to put that in there you will still need a harness, comp, maf sensor, igniter, coil packs.

you could always get the s14 sr20det stuff and use that longblock, you just would need to keep the boost psi down. there are people who have done it before. If you start looking you can find alot of the stuff you would need used on northwest nissans or zilvia

Technically you could swap the front case half off that tranny and mount it onto your '79. But that would be a step backwards as the 'B' is weaker and older. The SR tranny is a 'C' type and several inches longer so shorten the drive shaft.

Forget finding the EFI stuff and wiring it all up. Make a manifold and run a big carb. I don't think it will run much better than a good L20B until revved way up.

I wouldn't even bother unless I had seen this motor running in something. Someone has already stripped the wiring off. That's a lot of bother to find out it's a smoker or knocker. Gotta ask, what was it doing there? $70 for a 5 speed is sweet. The SR is an unknown quantity. Did you try to turn it over? Pull the oil filter and see what pours out with the oil.

Sorry to sound neg. you got way more than your money's worth. :D

The oil looks really clean and the clutch and fan and stuff are nice and solid. I cant tell you where I got it because the place is kinda a locals only secret :D but I can get rims there for $5 a piece and engines for $50 a pop. Plus I can buy stuff on credit. :) I can get webbers sometimes for $15 a pop if im lucky. I might trade it straight across for a KA with all the ecu and wiring stuff. I really think this engine is a runner but i wont know untill I do a more detailed inspection of its insides.

Ok well I figured it out. My engine is the SR20DE. Its from the s15 model!!!. it is a 165HP motor. The s15 came with a turbo varient that was a 250HP motor. I am going to go through the engine tomorrow morning. If the engine is in good shape Im keeping and building it. Wish me luck! ill post pictures of any problems I see.

Ya 165hp 160 tq, not bad. For 70 bucks it didn't matter what it was out of lol, was a great deal. You NEED to track down all the efi though. To run it carbed you'd be lucky to make 130hp/tq, the NVCS makes that motor what it is. I still think ka is better because it has a better tq curve and parts are easier to find/cheaper but I could see wanting to do it because power is close, the price was more then right and its just not done, rare is cool if you don't have to sacrifice much to get it. It takes a little more fab but it would be cool to see at that power level. Anything less would be a whats the point scenario lol. Good luck and congrats on finding that steal, looking forward to updates.

if it is a s15 it should be a 6 speed tranny :)

Ya 6 would def be cool but Idk if 160hp would be able to push a .767 6th. You'd need a crazy high rear. I'm pretty sure thats why they left such a high 6th too, 250hp isn't going to push a low 6th either. That gm t56 6th ratio is more my liking at .5.
