Fender mirror instal help

ohh.. but still doesnt make sense to em doesnt the spring go underneath the fender?? so whats the purpose of the big hole?? well anyway.. im still trying to find someone to patch up my holes..

I did the fender mirrors on my Z...I KINDA remember the bigger hole being bigger than any of my drill bits...been a while...i cant remember.

The previous owner to my goon had Mr. Earl Schieb paint it, so at least i know where to take it when I'm ready to get it patched :)

Making a guess here - doesn't the spring fit into some sort of cup in the larger hole, allowing the mirror & stem to move around/flex if it gets hit/snagged?

i'll post some pics of mine tomorrow but my whole is a little over 1/2 an inch just enough so the plastic base sits on top...

now i pose the question; what are the messurements for the other side? when i put some on my old S30 the passenger side one was not set even with the driver side one.
