Dogleg ID Help Needed

Recommended Posts

I have a couple of doglegs sold so I pulled these guys out of storage to get them ready but one of them looks different. The tranny in question is the one on the left hand side in every pic. Looks like someone swapped the bell housing?

The back end of each tranny look the same and they are all stamped 63A.....I wonder what the others in storage look like? I'm pretty sure I removed all these from L series engines.

The middle and right ones are L series FS5W63A doglegs. The left one is probably an FS5W63 and fits to the A series engine?.... and I'm too slow posting.

ggzilla, what year got the 63??? My info does not show only the FS5W60L up to the '80 model year and FS5W60A after. So where did it fit in?

The 63A behind an A series engine was only in the B210. My parts catalog says 4/76 on, but generally it's considered to be the ’78 B210 GX model only.

The 63A was never used in the B310 (210). They used the 60 series 5 speeds.

One of the easiest ways to identify the 63A for use behind an A series engine is the smaller pilot bushing diameter.

I've had this discussion before I think. Yeah, didn't look far enough back to the B 210. April '76, found it. Thanks Dave.

And thanks for those great pictures Jefe. Makes it so much easier.

The Datsun Service Bulletin says "1976 1/2". All the 5-speed B210s were the big heavy 63A model. Which is ironic because they were all fitted to lo-po A14s. Apparently Nissan had no smaller 5-speeds to handle the torque of A14, so it was converted to A-series use just after the fuel crisis.

1976 5-speed: 42/43/44 mpg California/Federal

1977 B210

1978 B210: 48 mpg est, 50 mpg final

4-Speed B210s:

1974: 39 mpg

1975: 39 mpg

1975 1/2 Honey Bee: (lightweight stipper model): 41 mpg

1976: 41 mpg

Automatic: 34 mpg
