defdes
80/90. I use Mobil 1 synthetic. But any reputable brand, Valvoline etc will work fine. Quote Link to comment
sycloned916
Thank You. I tried to search but could not find anything. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Older manual transmissions do not use 'transmission fluid'. Use 90W gear oil, per your Datsun owner's manual. Today you can use 85W-140 weight gear oil. Edited April 12, 2009 by ggzilla Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Ask for and make sure you get GL-4 rated oil. Don't let them tell you GL-5 is a better replacement for it. GL-5 is for rear ends that have no brass parts in it. If no GL-4 then switch to synthetic. Quote Link to comment
sycloned916
I got Valvoline Synthetic 80-140wt. Seems to shift alot smoother than that nasty gray old oil. One thing thoe when i drained the old oil on the drain plug there was a chip of metal on it.The other day when i was driving i put it in 4-gear and it seemed like it was slowing down?? I'll see tomorrow if the new oil helps it out abit. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The drain bung has a magnet on it so metallic 'grit' will collect there. Normally it's a black paste but I did drain one once with a ball bearing on it. :D Synthetic oil protects like 90W but is thin like 10W30 motor oil. Shifting when cold is way better and in warmer weather I found the shifts made a nice click sound into gear. Seemed smoother with less effort. I don't have a noisy tranny so I can't say if it will quiet a whiner. I use it in the trans case and diff. Check the diff oil level, better yet, if you are changing oils change it too. sycloned916
Do i us the same oil in the diff too or find some gl-5. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Definitely GL-5. It contains more of an additive to prevent scuffing of the gear surfaces. This additive is not good in trannys because it isn't very compatible with brass synchro rings. Quote Link to comment
