  1. The flange may possibly be bent. The drum is OLDDDD. It's already worn past the allowable machining tolerances. I'm not sure if the drum is bent from what you're describing Datsunaholic, or if it's just very badly warped from heat expansion. Once I get my new drum, I'll know for sure if that was the issue. Either way, I needed a drum.
  2. Okay so you guys are gonna love this. We pulled it apart and measured the shoe/drum tolerances with some cool old school micrometers he had. Then we put the drum on the lathe....... Video.. http://s1095.photobu...nt=IMG_1055.mp4 If you watch the video in fullscreen, the drum is so out of round that you can see it wobble on the lathe as if the drum was loose. It's only contacting about 25% of the drum every rotation. After turning the drum for a minuet or so, the difference was phenomenal. It was only dragging half the revolution now. So needless to say I ordered a drum.
  3. What's the cost? I just bought some housings from ebay, but I'm still within the return period if I can afford yours.
  4. Taking it to a friend to verify tomorrow. We're gonna put it up on his lift in his shop, pull the drums, and turn them on his lathe and see if we find anything. It'll also be a good time to straightedge the backing plate and see if it's bent.
  5. Okay, so here's my compression test results. Cylinder 1 Dry- 130 Wet-141 Cylinder 2 Dry- 110 Wet-125 Cylinder 3 Dry- 130 Wet- 150 Cylinder 4 Dry- 145 Wet- 150 I'm gonna start by adjusting the valves. A friend and master mechanic recommended me something called AutoRX to try freeing any stuck rings. He's an old Datsun nut. Pretty awesome guy to talk to. Cylinder 2 is a pretty big jump from the rest, so I'm gonna start there and assume the issue lies primarily there.
  6. McMaster- Carr is great. Funny thing, their warehouse that they ship orders from is about 30 minuets from my house. I get parts I ordered next day.
  7. Check partstrain.com and jcwhitney.com. Should still be there. BTW,
  8. I noticed the same thing. It would probably be okay if they took more time to make it fit, but you know 240 owners. _DSC0131 by metalmonkey47, on Flickr
  9. Look out everyone, captain planet is here! Rag&Bones, be careful, he might try to sue you because you used BRE stripes on your logo that are similar to his.
  10. I pulled out of the neighborhood, hit second gear, and blew the crankcase vent off  Just re-routed a few things and it will be okay. When I changed my oil pan gasket, I inspected it and it looked perfect. Although, it's possible for the oil pickup tube to be clogged from the inside right? And not visible from the outside? I'm gonna compression test it tomorrow afternoon and see what it reads. If not good, I'll just start looking for an L20B or L18 that I can rebuild on the side. If it reads okay, i'll get another pan gasket and drop the pan on my off day and pull the vent to clean it. The motor was supposedly rebuilt sometime in the last few years, and everything I've found so far reflects that, so maybe I'll just get lucky and it will be a stuck ring? Anyways, I bought a catch can so I'll put that on and see how it goes.
  11. Yeahhhhh, trying to avoid that for now. Since it's my DD and runs damn good, I gotta assume theres something else to investigate.
  12. I think this is probably going to be straight to the toilet for my motor. I fought a problem with my valve cover vent and such a while back where I had excess blow by from the valve cover vent. A few months back I ran my valve cover vent to my air cleaner, but the oil spray covering my carb got quite annoying so I decided I'd route it to a TEE on my PCV valve to crankcase vent to draw everything out via vacuum @ the PCV valve.. Only issue is that now, I've noticed more then ever that the crankcase is pressurizing itself. I've got oil leaking from fresh gaskets and when I pulled the oil cap off, it was like letting air out of a balloon. (Engine running of course.) Almost as if the PCV was doing nothing. The truck has NEVER burned oil (or smoked) but as expected, did lightly after running the valve cover to PCV. Now of course, the PCV valve is only a few months old but that doesn't mean it's any good. And the old "shake it" technique isn't really accurate. I know I need to run a compression test again, but last time I checked the average compression was around 160psi with no more then a variance of about 6-7 between cylinders. Where do I start next? Valve adjustment, compression check, etc??
  13. We decided we're going to end up starting monthly meets sometime soon in Kennesaw, so all is forgiven ;) I'll post pictures tomorrow.
  14. I think what he's saying is that if you have a points coil on the car now with a resistor at the coil, you need to leave it there until you get a coil that's designed for electronic ignition. All Datsun points ignitions had a ballast resistor @ the coil stock. Also, you can open your plug gap a bit with EI from .35 to .45 EDIT: I used the same dizzy on my truck before I switched to a matchbox. Easiest thing to do is get a matchbox module and wire it in. Then just get an EI coil.
  15. Yes and yes. Pints dizzy has the same cap/rotor.
  16. As long as you show up, that's all that matters ;). Just a few hours. Call me if you get lost! 6783274605
  17. Clicked the wrong face :geek: Whatever, ggzilla I poked you with a stick :poke: :poke: :poke: :poke: I turned in the adjuster, the brake continued to drag. I figured I'd give it a shot and try driving a few feet and braking to try re-centering the shoes but it still drags. It was not easy trying to re-adjust a dragging brake since you can't actually tell when it was tightening on the drum.
  18. Sorry guys been a little off it lately. Datsunaholic, thanks for the info on adjustment! I'm gonna go over them again and give that a shot. It's pretty much the same as what I did, but not exactly 100%. Figbuck, glad I'm not the ONLY person to hate drum brakes. I've never really had this much of a problem out of any of my Datsuns, but hot damn, drum brakes really suck.... Datsundash, fuuuccccck you! I thought everyone finally forgot about it  GGzilla, when I started the adjustment, the adjuster was turned in all the way. I tried driving it with the adjuster turned in all the way to see if it would make any difference in the dragging, but I just simply had no brakes :poke: I'm gonna go ahead and assume I have a bent backing plate. It's not that hard to change, thank GOD. I just have to find one. And my shoes are under lifetime warranty (hoorah) from Autozone. I think they're manufactured by Albany?
  19. Yeah, partstrain doesn't have them listed 90% of the time.
  20. Considering he lives on the other side of the world....
  21. Probably mostly because of the bottlecap. I used the JBWeld over the pinholes before I realized I should have used something under it first.
