whitechef
My 71 521 with an L20B was sitting for 3 years when I bought it due to an overheated and warped head. I had the head machined to flat and did nothing else. I put it back together and now it runs like a top, no coolant loss, lots of power, starts right up on frosty mornings, good oil pressure and doesn't get hot. The problem is it smokes like a freight train. I'm thinking maybe valve seals. When I had the head off the cylinders looked good with barely any ridge. I also asked the previous owner if it had smoked before she parked it and she said no. So waddafug? Any ideas? thanks guys. Quote Link to comment
philip1
did you rebuild the head? if not it should be done Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Sitting for 3 years after blowing a head gasket? I'd think the cylinders would be a tad rusty where the rings were sitting after all that time. It COULD be the stem seals, though I've found that is seldom the case. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Yep, my smokey L's were broken and/or stuck rings. Quote Link to comment
hang_510
if it only smoke on start ups (& till warmed) then the valve seals would be the main suspect. since it does it all the time = rings. :( i have the same escape smoke screen too :poop: sat for 10 years though... philip1
also if you are seeing oil in the water you probably need a new head they will crack an oil passage if they warp bad enough. Quote Link to comment
