AC in 1977 Datsun 620

I’ve owned a 1977 620 for about a month now and I’m thinking once summer rolls around I’d like to put AC in the ride. It looks like there are holes in the firewall for ac lines which is a start. Doesn’t look like there are any ac kits specifically for it. I’m wondering if I should just use a universal under dash ac kit. Has anyone done this successfully and have any tips? I’m also wondering what people have done for the compressor bracket. Is

it not a good idea? Thanks

AC was an option from '77 on, on the 620, before that it was a dealer installed 'kit', but where will you find a kit now??? It involved using a clunky York compressor mounted where the fuel pump is and an electric pump installed. Datsun cars had the pump mounted below the distributor because the truck steering box was not in the way. Go with a newer technology AC.

Modern AC systems are way more efficient than the systems on older cars or trucks. The modern compressors are a ton smaller too.

Most modern kits are all-in-one heater/AC combos, so you can ditch the factory heater to make room for the under dash unit.

If you have any fabrication skills, and are patient with fiddling around, I'd go for an aftermarket kit. The Vintage Air kits are pretty good, and reasonably priced. If you want a nicer kit, go with Resto-Mod Air. Either way, you'll need to find a place to mount the controls. You'll probably need to make some adapters for the ducting, and you'll need to fit the unit itself. That can be challenging. I don't like to use the brackets that come with the kits because they are kind of rinky dink.

Again, you'll need to fab a compressor bracket as well as the stuff mentioned above.
