Z31 gauge upgrade

My dad has a 1986 Z31. The tach and speedo are not working anymore.

The tach just sits there, all the time. I want to convert to a contact tachometer while still keeping the stock gauge cause I like the way it looks.

The speedometer I want to convert to a gps unit, while keeping the stock gauge.

Has anyone ever done this? I know this is a stupid question but I am a wacko.

Try reaching out to speedhut... I know they make their gauges almost to order since they are customizable.....

Maybe they could rebuild yours with modern electronics......

On a side note have you check for a problem why they dont work?

Or bench tested them?

Could be a broken cable or wire....

I checked yesterday and the '86 300zx did still use a cable speedometer. Disconnect from the transmission and spin the cable inside the sheath and have someone watch the dial. Try both directions. Speedometer should jump when twisted. If the outer heath is damaged water can get in and freeze in the winter. Easy enough to replace.
