1983 720 King Cab (2wd) Front Wheel Hubs

Does the front wheel hub have an outer seal or a lock ring for the outer bearing? I’ve been looking at diagrams and videos and I’m not seeing one. Looks to me like there is just the washer, lock nut & cover, and pin.

Any knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Seal? well not like the inner one that presses in, no. The bearing is held in place by a washer, nut, nut cap, cotter pin. The only seal is the O ring on the wheel nut dust cap.

There is also a procedure for setting the correct bearing pre load with the wheel nut before the cotter pin is installed.

Bearing pre load?

Tighten wheel nut 25-29 ft. lbs.

Spin wheel hub several turns in both directions.

Check nut is still 25-29 ft lbs.

Loosen nut 45 degrees.

Install adjusting cap so that cotter pin aligns with hole in spindle. If you must, turn nut in the tight direction (but not more than 15 degrees) till it does line up. Always use a new cotter pin.

Yes, use the proper method and you'll never have loose wheel bearings.

You could also get a cheap fish scale to measure the preload. Should be about 6 to 12 pounds.
