Three bolt thermostat housings were introduced for the '69 model year on the 620, 280zx and 810. It will be on the first year '80 720 the last year the L20B was used. Oh... you're in Australia.

You can switch to a 2 bolt if you also switch to a two bolt thermostat cover. Just need the set.

Did the 2 bolt design have the 3 holes? Rad bypass, temp sensor and auto choke valve?

The early L16 ones had nothing other than the temperature sender. Later ones had a coolant by-pass outlet to replace the jiggle valve. L20B ones had the TVV (thermal vacuum valve) that only allowed EGR when the engine was warmed up. Some L28s had three extra senders in addition to the temperature sender for the EFI and emissions system. Any one will do if if you have a complete set.

I 'rubbed' mine back and forth on sand paper on a sheet of glass to true up the surfaces. Made the gasket with a hole punch, scissors and a cereal box.
