New guy old truck-79'

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm a fan of pretty much anything old. I buddy has a 79' P/U that I am interested in buying. He started a restoration and lost interest. Quick basic questions, is it still possible to get mechanical/chassis parts for these trucks? Are there any known problem areas on the frame for rust damage etc? The truck spent its enitre life in Pecos, Tx which is normally dry/hot so I am thinki9ng it should be good rust wise. It was a true owned by grandma truck and was not beat on. If I remember right these came with 4 speeds? I am guessing 75-80 current speed limits are not the best for these? I'll know more in a week or so when I see it in person. Just knowing if I can get parts or not will help. If I pass I will get with my buddy about posting here for a enthusiast to pick it up.

The 620 truck has a box frame with a horizontal weld on the insides. If there is rust damage it will be along this weld. Unlikely if Texas.

You can find most consumables like brake shoes, ball joints, ignition parts, radiator hoses, shocks and engine peripherals such as alternators, starters, fuel pumps at most auto supply stores.

A four speed or automatic was standard equipment with a five speed an option from '77 onward.

You can drive the 620 at any speed that it will go. Won't hurt it. It's only 95 hp so if it will go 5,000 that's 88 MPH.

When buying a 'vintage' vehicle the best thing to do is get one that is in the most complete condition and running.
