Nocnir
Hey is the choke suppose to be this opened? Can I spray some Carb and choke cleaner directly on it? My car been recently starting rough and idling rough and shuts off if don't give it gas and let it warm for while. Does this mean the carburetor needs tuning? http://imgur.com/MLCiSBG Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
When cold it should close fully the first time you step on the gas. It may be sticking so spray the far (back ) side below that round thing in the picture with the wire going to it. Hold the throttle half open and move all the moving linkage parts. The carb does not need tuning. The problem appears to be the choke not working. The choke forces a rich mixture for a cold engine. The choke is electrically heated and turns off in about the time it take for the engine to warm up. 2 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
also if dont idel at all the idle jet maybe plugged make sure carb is tight. sometime what looks like a carb can be a bad condensor in the distributor if your still run points. or worn distributor bushing. but idle should be fine its the higher rpms when it cuts out olddatsuns.com the tech section. save this 2 Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
Make sure the carburetor is not loose at the base, if it is it'll suck air and no matter what adjustment you make it won't run right. 1 Quote Link to comment
Nocnir
So i adjusted the choke and the car started fine, but as soon as i stepped on the gas the choke went back to the same position it was before. So it's getting stuck, is there a way to fix this or do i have to replace it ? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Adjust it? How?? When the engine is cold and before starting, step on the gas and release. What you should see is the choke plate snap closed. Does it? NO... the choke may be disconnected from the choke coil inside the choke heater housing. The coil is a bi-metallic strip of metal that contracts when cold and uncoils when warm. When cold it is tightly wound up and pulls the choke plate closed. As the coil warms up it unwinds and opens the choke plate. Behind this choke heater housing is the coil spring and an electric heater. It's held on by three screws. Loosening them allows you to turn the choke setting richer or leaner. Inside you can see the coil and a J shaped loop on the outer end by my finger. This J in the coil must be positioned on the rod the choke plate is on so it will be turned by it. If you turn the choke housing to the right (lean) the choke plate should open. Left should close it. If it does not move the J part may not be on the shaft. In the back you can just see the electric heater coil... The electric choke heater is a very accurate method of warming the choke at a rate similar to the warming of the engine. It prevents the driver from forgetting to turn the choke off and reduces gas waste and sets the choke at the proper amount depending on the temperature. It removes the human error.
