Datsun pickup
Would the clutch safety switch affect how the engine runs? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It won't but there are others that will. One prevents the fuel shut off from activating. What's the engine doing Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
The engine will not stay running, only with the accelerator pedal. one coil is not getting any power, but the other one gets power until the rpm’s go down, then the volts drop, therefore it runs poorly. it also backfires a lot. datzenmike
Replace the first fuse on the far left. 10 amp to get the coil working. The engine is tuned to work on two coils and will run like crap on only one so this may fix everything. When does it backfire? What are you doing when it does? Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
I am constantly pressing the throttle pedal, when the rpm’s go down to around 1000 it starts backfiring multiple times. When it backfires I press the throttle pedal. the ear piercing squeal was back again too, it is not the belt, but I have no idea what it is. Datsun pickup
Also my fuel sending unit doesn’t work (it worked before I cleaned it), it was very rusty, so I cleaned it up with ospho while cleaning the tank. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The electrical plug at the back of the carburetor... 2 wires or round 6 wire connector? Listen near back of carburetor while someone turns ignition on off on off... You should hear a soft clicking sound. Does it do this??? This is the idle cut solenoid and if not working there will be no fuel for idle. Squeal could be water pump or alternator bearing, air con idler/tensioner bearing, power steering idler/tensioner bearing. Loosen belt completely to fine which one. Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
Do the webers have the idle cut solenoid? Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
This whole mess started when we adjusted the timing to where it should be. how do I wire in the 4WD oil pressure switch into the 2wd? Edited October 7, 2023 by Datsun pickup Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The Yellow/Green wire is for the red low oil pressure warning light in the dash, that stays. The Yellow/Blue wire on the 720 oil pressure gauge connects to the second terminal on the 4x4 sender. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Well with both coils firing timing is about 3 degrees BTDC. If at proper idle speed (about 600-700 RPM) there is no vacuum signal to the vacuum advance. If not, then some vacuum may be messing the timing. Just pull the hose off and check. Engine must be thoroughly warmed up. Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
Where is the yellow/blue wire? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Do you have the 4x4 oil pressure gauge? it should have a Yellow/Blue wire on it. Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
There is 8.4v at the clutch safety switch, 2v at one coil and 0v at the other coil. replacing the fuse didn’t do anything. Edited October 8, 2023 by Datsun pickup Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
Would something in or at the distributor have failed? Do I need to readjust the ignition rotor? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well that ain't right. Power to the coils goes this way... Battery to... Fusible link to... ignition switch... here power splits into.. 1/ goes to intake side coil positive terminal 2/ powers the first 5 fuses including the exhaust coil positive terminal Check the voltage on that first fuse. Lets see what you have here and follow it back. Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
The one prong fusible link has no power at all. the first fuse also had no power. Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
With the engine at tdc this is the placement of the rotor pointing towards cylinder 1. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Green fusible link has no power, well that's your problem. Clean connections and/or be sure to replace with same 40 amp rated fusible link wire. You could just replace with a 40 amp fuse but the beauty of a fusible link is it can withstand far more than 40 amps for several seconds without blowing. A fuse will blow instantly so carry spares. If standing at the driver's side fender looking in the outside rotor (intake side plugs) should point toward the radiator (9 o'clock) and the inner rotor (exhaust side plugs) to about 4:30 o'clock. As in the picture below Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
Which one is my problem? My rotor is not pointed in the way you mentioned. Edited October 9, 2023 by Datsun pickup Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If you are absolutely sure that you are at TDC compression stroke on #1 cylinder, then unbolt the distributor and lift it out. Look down the hole with a flashlight, again, from the driver's side fender, and you should see this... If the 'small side' half moon is on the other side you are on the exhaust stroke TDC. Turn the engine one full turn up to TDC on compression stroke. Now it should look like the picture above. Put distributor back in and check the rotor positions. Take a picture from the driver's fender, it's the only way for me to see what you see. Quote Link to comment
