Tech-guy
I am looking for a 22 or 23 tooth speedo pinion gear for a Datsun 5 speed. Part number 32703-86402 or 32703-86403. Nissan no longer makes the part. Does anyone know another source for that part? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You obviously have a speedo reading way too fast from a transmission that was in a vehicle with larger diameter tires and a low numerical differential, like a 3.364. Your car (if you had filled in your profile) has either smaller tires or a much higher numerical differential like a an old 520 with 4.889 differential. More info. What vehicle do you have. This might tell me the differential ratio. What Datsun 5 speed? Early 200sx or 71B? 1 Quote Link to comment
Tech-guy
It is a 280zx 5 speed with a 4.11 LSD and 195/60R14 tires. Driving this car in 5th gear at an indicated speed of 70 mph, my GPS unit indicates 64 mph. So the indicated speed is 10% higher than the actual speed. I removed the pinion gear and counted the teeth: there were 21. In order to reduce the indicated speed by 10%, I need to increase the number of teeth by 10%; which in this case is 2 teeth. So a 23 tooth speedo gear will give me very close to the true speed. Oh yes, I found a 23 tooth gear up in the NE. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I would not trust the GPS as far as I could throw it. It definitely shows there is a problem but people place too much reliance on their accuracy. I agree about 5% per tooth +- What was the 23 tooth used in?? Quote Link to comment
Tech-guy
The 23 tooth pinion gear works perfectly. Indicated speed now matches GPS. As for GPS accuracy: I checked GPS speed vs speedometer speed in both a 2013 FRS and 2008 Mazda 3, in both case they matched. I do not know what this 23 tooth speedo pinion came out of; it was an optional gear available for several different 5 speed gearboxes. Quote Link to comment

I need one badly for my 510 with 81 280zx trans, 195/60r14 tires, 4.44 Subaru VLSD R160 diff If anyone knows any dealership that stocks 22-23 tooth speedo cogs or has an extra one please PM me or post here! domn8tr
What color is the cog you want, or do you know? Green 23 tooth for 4.44 diff. 4x4 720 pickups should have had them but I cant find any in the yards around me. 32703-86402 22T (orange) 32703-86403 23T (green) Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Wayno there were no 4.44 diff 720s there were 4.375 and 4.625.... that's it. Plus the tire size would throw it out. Assuming the stock 510 was 3.90 differential, 5:60x13" (24") diameter tires and a 17 tooth pinion gear... then 3K would read 55MPH A 4.44 differential, with 195/60R14 (22.21") diameter tires, then 3K would read only 44.66 MPH. Roughly 23% wrong 23% added to a 17 tooth pinion is 20.91 teeth or 21 tooth. You are in luck, the S12 (200sx) did use a 21 tooth on some models. There are two ways to go here. You can replace the plastic gear on the zx sleeve (for about $15) with the 21 tooth or replace the entire sleeve (about $30) with the 21 tooth gear in it. To be safe I would recommend buying the sleeve with the gear already on it. 21 tooth plastic gear........................... 32703-86401 Sleeve assy with 21 tooth gear........... 32702-E9821* I'm more confident doing this. Thanks for chippin in mike, I had purchased a 21 tooth red cog and sleeve assembly from the Z store because they had it in stock, but after I installed it my speedo is still 5-10% too fast. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Each tooth is worth about 5% change, roughly. Are you comparing to another car? I don't trust GPS measurements. 1 Quote Link to comment

I am comparing vs a 2014 Ford Focus and also a GPS, the focus is about 1mph faster on its gauge than the GPS. my speedo reads about 5-6% faster at 40mph and 10% faster at 85mph. Quote Link to comment
wayno
I know there are not any 4.44 diffs Mike, all I asked is what color he was looking for, I have a couple of them around here.
