fullthrottle
Gday My mate has a pretty good datto 720 duel cab with a z22 in it and has found out the head is beyond repair( not sure on exactily whats wrong with it but the head shop said its no good to rebuild). The problem is noone can find another head for a z22 in Adelaide if anyone either has one laying around or a complete motor or anyothe suggestions eg swap a complete L18/20 motor in it if it would be easier any ideas will be great. Help another datto live. Quote Link to comment
laotsu
find an L20b head and put that on, of course you'll need the manifolds as well. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
That will definitely bump it up but will require a complete changing of timing chain cover, timing chain, manifolds, carb?, throttle cable, down pipe. And the L head air filter will be in the way of the 720s master cylinder. Quote Link to comment

fullthrottle
So is this all that is required to swap to an L20 head? or is it just as easy to swap a complete l20 and gearbox into it? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The Z22 is oriented about 8 degrees to the right of vertical as viewed from the front. The L series engine is oriented 12 degrees to the left of vertical. If you instal an L head on a Z series engine the intake and exhaust, being on the right will likely not have room to fit. The carb will also be tilted almost 20 degrees down towards the front wheel, like permanently driving with two wheels up on the curb. This can be remedied by using L series engine mounting brackets to tilt the Z22 block over to the (in your case diver's side) The problem with this is the transmission will also rotate and place the shifter into your right hip and tear out the rubber mount. This can be fixed by replacing the transmission with one for an L series engine. Complicated isn't it. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
....and the L 4 plug distributor. Quote Link to comment
laotsu
sounds like an L swap would be easier Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
sounds like an L swap would be easier Easier than locating a Z22 head somewhere other than Adelaide? I don't think so. Quote Link to comment
fullthrottle
OK so the motor is the 4 plug version z22, He as been able to find a rebuilt 8 plug head, would that work (only running off four plugs)??? Thanks for the info so far excellent forum you guys have here!! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If YOUR engine is 4 plug then yes an 8 plug will work with the extra exhaust side holes sealed up. I wouldn't leave the spark plugs in as they become hot spots and a possible cause of pre ignition. Quote Link to comment
