But shoesmith is a computer genius. Not all of us could convert regular lights to sequential.

The Bluebird sequential control boxes cost a small fortune, The newer electronic units are much simpler, and more reliable. And about 1/3 the price.

What does the signal splitter do? Do you need that because there is only one turn signal globe in each taillight?

The signal splitter is needed because the turn signal lamp circuit and brake lamp circuit interfere with each other with sequential turn signals. The splitter "sorts out" the signal from the brake lamp and the turn signal lamp circuit so that when you press the brake while the turn signal is on, the turn signal continues to operate, alerting the driver behind you.
