Transmission oil

Hey lads

 

I'm doing a 5 speed swap in my brother's truck - we pulled the 5 speed out of a 79 620. (or it was labeled that way). I'm wondering what gear oil you guys are using in said transmission. I know its supposed to be GL-4 but are there any specific ones? I use Redline in my Z but that's not on the cheap side in stores.

The Z and truck trans are the same, so you use the same stuff.  GL-4 isn't easy to find, all I've found recently that wasn't excessively expensive is Sta-Lube.

The 620 and z/zx use the same transmission type so redline is fine. What's your transmission worth to you? Would $20 be so much to protect it and keep it running for the next 30 to 50K? That's $0.004 per mile over 50K. A cent every 2 1/2 miles.

napa was the only place i found that had a true gl4, stalube, as mentioned above.

oreilly, autozone, pepboys, and one other didnt have it.

I don't mind using redline but all the places here that sell it will be close tomorrow.  I could hunt around tomorrow for true GL-4's but time is not on my side as I only really have one day to do this all.

let your fingers do the walking. call napa. if they dont stock it, ask em the nearest napa that does.
