Well, I eventually got the steering box out. I used a chisel and pry bar to spread the metal and then pry it out. I bent a screw driver and a small pair of pliers trying to spread the metal prior to that. It still took quite a bit of effort, prying, and swearing to get the box out even loosening the metal clamp.

 

I got the replacement steering box in, and now the steering wheel finally returns to the center after turning, it's great.

Prying the back of the steering box against the u-joint housing was most effective for me. I sprayed PB Blaster on it, but I still had to struggle with it for 2 hours before finally prying it loose. I was only able to spread the metal a small amount.
