Removing Steering Box

I'm trying to remove my steering box, but it appears to be stuck to the steering column. I removed the bolt that was clamping it to the U-Joint, but I still can't get it off. Any tips for removal?

A very blunt chisel or something to pound into the slot to spread the metal slightly. It should just pry off the spline then.

Well, I eventually got the steering box out. I used a chisel and pry bar to spread the metal and then pry it out. I bent a screw driver and a small pair of pliers trying to spread the metal prior to that. It still took quite a bit of effort, prying, and swearing to get the box out even loosening the metal clamp.

 

I got the replacement steering box in, and now the steering wheel finally returns to the center after turning, it's great.

Yeah the 510 box is no longer available and neither are most of the bearings and worm gear parts. The B210/610/710 boxes have these parts and they could be rebuilt using these less worn parts.

I have one in a 510 that I still can't get out, same issue as you. I've tried the pry bars, chisels, hammers, Kroil, etc....and it won't budge.

Prying the back of the steering box against the u-joint housing was most effective for me. I sprayed PB Blaster on it, but I still had to struggle with it for 2 hours before finally prying it loose. I was only able to spread the metal a small amount.

Yep, tried that too. I played with it forever. I gave up and I'm just leaving it in the car.

I pulled the steering column away from the box, not the box away from the steering column.

I think if a 3 foot pry bar between the box and u-joint doesn't budge it one bit, me pulling on the steering wheel isn't going to help.
