mtngoat
Ok now with the deathmobile out of the shop it's time to dig the Roadster out from under the various things piled on and in it and get to work. Tires are shot Ran fine when parked Alternator needs new brushes Parked because of rear wheel cylinder issues combined with new baby Seats are shot It's been on stands in the dry shop the entire time So... Any swaps for an IR alternator? Wouldnt mind going pointless with Pertronix, the Deathmobile has run it for years no issue Probly put fourrunner seats in it they're awesome in the goon Safest way to turn over a motor which hasnt run in years? Oil in the plug holes then give er some cranking? Comments welcome Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411
Alternator needs new brushes New brushes were at least recently available from RockAuto. Standard Motor Products Inc. P/N JX-99, Brushes, Alternator. So... Any swaps for an IR alternator? As long as the original alternator isn't blasted, use an external solid state regulator. Replacement solid state regulators are mechanically and plug in compatible. Safest way to turn over a motor which hasnt run in years? Oil in the plug holes then give er some cranking? Squirt in some Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF. Let soak for a day or two. Turn over with a wrench on the nut securing the crankshaft pulley once or twice. Go away for a day or two. Repeat until you can't stand to twist one more time. Put in new spark plugs and good luck! Quote Link to comment
datsunrides
The GM IR alt is a common swap due to the availability and cost, but most IR alternators can be made to work. There is no "bolt in" swap. Check out East Coast Roadsters for a drop in EI distributor conversion. Beware the death rattle caused by loose timing chains. Chains are available, it's the gears and tensioners that are $$$$$. Mark Quote Link to comment
