How to figure out correct length v-belt

Here is a quick easy way to figure out correct length v-belt, really comes in handy when doing some type of swap or conversion. Using rope or twine will not give you an accurate reading, as they don't ride in the pulleys the same as a belt does(usually sink in the pulleys too far, giving you a shorter measurement). Get yourself an extra long v-belt next time you're at the parts store. Now cut it leaving you with one long belt. Now you can wrap it around your pulleys and mark it with a yellow grease pencil where it meets back up with itself. Now you can measure it and viola, you can get the right length belt the first time! This is a real time saver. Good luck!

I'm swapping an '01 Altima alternator into my 710.  I've custom ground down the block mounting bracket and this allows it to swing closer to the block but still couldn't get the stock belt on. Trouble is, I don't have a longer fan belt laying around. Maybe I can cut an old short one and measure the gap or go to a wrecking yard and get something off an old truck..
