BOZO
I am replacing the 4 speed tranny in my 1974 620 with a FS5W71B from an approx. 1978 truck. The salvage yard crushed and broke the tail shaft housing which holds the rear seal. The tailshaft housing on my old 4 speed looks similar. Can I swap them out? Also the reverse gear is a little rounded on one side from grinding into gear before stopping. Can it be reversed to used the good side of the gear? Some of you guys posting on here are total wizards on these trannys and being as this is my first rice burner tranny, I hold your advice in high regard. Quote Link to comment
datsundash
The reverse gear is straight cut and could probably be flipped as long as it is exactly the same on the opposite side. Mike will know about the tailshaft. I hope you didnt pay more than 10$ for it with it being damaged. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 4 speed tail is much different looking than the 5 speed. It might work, never thought to try it. If you can flip the reverse gear around go ahead. It will run and sound the same because it has straight cut gears and whines. Quote Link to comment
