Silvester
Appears that someone ground off the timing marks on my crank pulley and cant set the timing correctly. Can someone please sell/give/lend me their 78' l20b crank pulley? Thanks! Link to comment
datzenmike
Some L motors have the timing scale on the other side of the block. Maybe the pulley was swapped. Link to comment
ggzilla
So we need to know which timing cover you have, to know which pulley you need. Got pics? Link to comment
Silvester
the saw tooth timing indicator is on the left side of the crank pulley location (looking at the motor) Link to comment
EricJB
Or you could find TDC, and file a notch in the pulley at zero degrees. Link to comment
Silvester
Cant find TDC on the lower end when the timing chain is off... Unless you pull the head off which i'm not gonna do. Link to comment
EricJB
While it is easier to do with the head off, it's still doable. If the chain is off just put the cam at tdc (valves closed). Put the #1 piston mid stroke. find a bolt that will thread in the spark plug hole. Slowly, gently rotate the pulley clockwise until the piston touches the bolt. Mark the pulley at zero. Rotate counter clockwise untill the piston touches the bolt. Mark the pulley at zero. True TDC is in the middle of the two marks. Notch the pulley with a file and your done. Link to comment
ggzilla
Finding TDC is not the same as rotating the engine to any marks. Disassembling the engine is not needed. In the time-honored tradition, you remove a spark plug and use a piston stop. Hot Rod magazine has covered this many times. Then you mark the pulley where this true TDC is. Stock marks are sometimes off. Link to comment
ggzilla
^ what EricJB said Anyways, your cover looks like the stock 1978 620 timing cover (L20B). There are two different crank pulleys, for A/C and without A/C. Which do you need? Link to comment
Silvester
Well I really appreciate your advice here and i will no longer be needing a Pulley :) Link to comment
