JP521
I have a question, is there some consideration when replace the transmission oil on a 521, and avoid damage? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Use a brand that says "Yellow Metal Safe" if you cannot locate any GL4 80w90. The F4W63 should hold about 2 liters. You may want to try a synthetic oil and there are some advantages beside lowering friction. The transmission may run quieter and shift better. A possible disadvantage is that the synthetic oil is so slippery that it will get past old worn seals and leak. I replaced the oil in my transfer case and within a month the upper input seal, the one that is furthest above the oil, began leaking. I replaced it and it was good and still is. RedBanner
royal purple makes alot of yellow safe etuff, is expensive but then if your seals are bad you know right away couse theirs purple puddles in the drive way :D Quote Link to comment
JP521
No. The synthetic is a great choice but ill use later. Well if i put a 80W90 GL5 there will be some damage? Yes in this case the R4W63 hold 2 litres. Thanks Quote Link to comment

Thanks yes, damage, it corodes the brass, ok in emegencies i guess but if you have synchros and bushings that work use gl4 or somehing that says safe for gl4. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You have a column shift? (R4W63) We didn't get them in the 521. Good to know. Over time the GL-5 will slowly corrode the brass synchro rings. Quote Link to comment
JP521
After searching everywhere GL4 oil. I could not find even one quarter. Why? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
It will be labled "GL5". Then read the label to ensure it also says "GL4" Suitable for use where the following API service designations apply: GL-2, GL-3, GL-4, and GL-5 If it does not mention GL-4, keep looking. I used 80W-90, it is very good for Datsuns. Quote Link to comment

I used 80W-90, it is very good for Datsuns. Even if it mentions GL4, it's not always yellow metal safe. The Napa brand GL-5/GL-4 isn't yellow metal safe, neither is the Autozone stuff. ggzilla
It doesn't need to be. As long as it meets API-GL4 specification, that's what is called for by the Datsun owner's manual. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Here is my 1972 owner's manual * API GL-4 * MIL-L-2105 My 1982 Factory Service Manual says API-GL4 (doesn't mention the MIL spec). Quote Link to comment
JP521
Ok, I not found anywhere GL4 oil, then Im thinking in import 2 or 3 quarts of the famous Royal Purple or RedLine. Which recommends for Royal Purple, the Max-Gear or the Synchromax??? And for RedLine??? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Same here, GL4 is not common. The correct oil says "GL5" and in the small print says it is compatible with the GL4 specification. No need to buy expensive synthetic oil. Quote Link to comment
