Regular Maintenance

Dice T

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a '73 240z. 94xxx miles and in great shape. I don't want to be the owner who ruins this immaculate condition z. besides the usual oil change, tire, fluids maintenance, are there any other maintenance I should do regularly or maintain on an almost 40 year old car?

Adjust the valves. Grease the suspension and U-joints. Check the suspension for looseness. Flush the coolant system. Change the fluid in the trans and differential. Flush the brakes fluid. Air and fuel filters.

^^That just about covers it.

Just locate any odd bumps/knocks/squeaks/rattles and solve them!

Yes ,,,

FIRST ,,, Do not use a "FRAM" Oil Filter ,,, Period ,,, They are crap enough said :D

Use Lead Substitute ,,, in the gas ,,, for the valve seats/faces sake ( I believe pertaining to pre-75-76 z car heads ?! :) ( add to tank when filling up )

Garage or park under cover if you can ,,,

Dial in SU Carbs on a regular basis ( at least every month )

Check your Tranny fluid level / Diff Fluid Level !!!

Inspect Condition of Fuse Box ,,, if need be ,,, order one from MSA ( it's about $180 + shipping )

Inspect condition of Door Hinges ( replace if sagging or hard to open/close )

Cover up any "bare spots" with touch up paint

Use a visor in windshield to prevent cracks in dash , and fading interior

Condition the seats with correct conditioner ,,,

Under-coat the car ,,, EVERYWHERE ,,, I mean everywhere !!!

Inspect/Clean Electrical connections !!!

Add Oil Additivie that has proper amount of Zinc in it ,,, to protect cam !!!

USE ONLY "NGK" spark plugs ,,, for cheapy's ,,, they are the best all around !!!

Replace Rotor/Cap

Flush/Inspect Brake System

Check all steering components ,,,

Usually all suspension components are worn out by now if not replaced at some point ,,,

Have Timing Chain Slack Inspected ,,, and replace ALL time components when done

Water Pumps CAN be a weak point ,,, usually they do fine !!!

Make sure to change out Anti-freeze at least every two years !!!

After X amount of time ,,,and depending on the history of the car .... the Fuel tanks ,,, "rust out" or collect "crap" in them ,,, just another thing to keep in mind :)

Change the oil ,,, often ,,,( 3 months or 3,000 miles ,,, do not let it sit around in the engine even if ran low low miles on the oil change ,,, it become acidic ,,, just not a good idea !

Inspect mechanical fuel pump and make sure it isn't leaking into your gas/watering down the gas ,,, hence ruining the engine ,,, ( usually only when the mechanical fuel pump goes bad !!!)

Z cars ARE NOTORIOUS for rear end "clunking" sounds ---->>> Not a big deal !! really !!! :) ,,,, If you hear clunks in the rear ,,, check the driveshaft bolts tightness as well as Half-shaft bolt tightness ,,, then check driveshaft u-joints as well as half-shafts ,,, then check mustache bar bushings ,,, and rear differential mount ,,, as well as the rear diff mount Strap ( above the diff to limit it's travel ) ,,, check the rear bearing play , and splines on the stub-axles if all others prove to be in "good condition" ,,, as well as bushings ! they all go out ,,, lastly the differential play as well ,,, the cars are old

etc etc etc ,,,

Enjoy the car !!! You have a beaut !!!
