burrito213
i have been getting ready to paint some stuff up that recommends using pre prep on the forums and threads i have read (engine bay, chassis) ... my issue, it smells like acetone, goof off, or carb cleaner. can i just use carb cleaner or parts cleaner in place of this pre paint prep stuff?... has anyone ever used it? any info would greatly help. thank you. metalmonkey47
In my experience, there is no substitute for a good paint prep. Remember, you pay for what you get. I payed $30 for some Sherwin Williams paint prep stuff, and it's quite amazing. I've got 3/4 of a bottle still and I've done quite a bit of painting. Quote Link to comment
hobbes_the_cat
don't try using other stuff, I tried acetone and my paint bubbled BAD. had to sand off and start over. Just buy the pre or other specific paint compatible product and save yourself the trouble. goof off and carb cleaner have other chemicals in them that will not work with paint. Quote Link to comment
BRYAN503
As stated above anything other that "paint prep" will not work because it will leave a thin film. Quote Link to comment

FoxyRoadster
I use POR15 marine clean, its not toxic but will strip cheap spray paint off. Quote Link to comment
