Yakima spoiler question

Ok folks, made a custom spoiler for my Yakima bars, question, does the spoiler have to actually touch the roof? Or can it rest within an inch of the roof surface??

 

And is it ok on the channel with no boots??

Touches roof with foam pads. In the gutter feet I'd use that plastic dip coating

im putting a set of thule cross bars on my 521 for looks.but that clear plastic dont look good in my opinion and i think it acts as a air deflector which is why you would want angle and for it to touch the roof.
