max2004
Had this problem after I aquired this beasty . . . Fuel pump stopped working for a whiles, so I applied 12v directly to the pump to move it. Later after resetting some grounds and other wires, it worked again. Been running fine for months, Now it's doing it again GGGGGRRRRR !!!!! Had to hardwire the fuel pump to move it. I can't have this happenning in the bush. I know it's not the fuse. Could it ne the secret fuel pump module below right side dash? How to check this? What else could it be.??? I've noticed the fuel circulates through the carb back to the gas tank. Is it ok to run the pump constantly? What would the lifespan be? Anyone done this? Please help! Quote Link to comment

Clean/blow fuel lines out Confirm the pumps/bracket ground is intact. Confirm power at fuel pump/harness plug in.....no rotted wires etc. Replace inline filters The return line is for any unused fuel to return to the tank....stock pumps will easily last over 200000kms running 'all' the time.....usually their fault is from ..........the aforementioned. I think... :) Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Thought you were from Fla?????? The return line usually has a restriction in it so the pump reaches pressure and pauses briefly. It does not pump at full speed and the fuel keeps it cool. You could try a larger wire so there is less voltage drop at the pump. Be sure you have a good ground to the frame for a return to battery. Be sure the negative battery post has a really good ground connection to the body/frame. There is a filter under the cap that twists onto the bottom of the stock pump that can be removed and replaced (or at least dumped out) the cap has a magnet to catch rust. The pt. number is 16404 288530. Always run an inline filter up near the carb. I don't know about the fuel pump relay. It needs input from the starter and then oil pressure to keep it on. Looks somewhat like the room lamp delay timer.... I wonder. Quote Link to comment

max2004
Sealik, yes it's the stock pump, all lines appear to be working when the pump is working under direct 12v. King Rat, nosireee, born and come up the BC way. hang_10, I reset all grounds I could find, still nothing. Then I reset 'em all again, this time filing/sanding etc... Still nothing. Gave the secret fuel pump relay a good thrashing while key was on. Heard the fuel pump! Then it go off again, when I shook/held the secret fuel pump relay in a certain way the pump worked. Found this article about the problem I have here:: http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Datsun-and-Nissan-Pickup-Fuel-Pump-Relay-What-the-Haynes-Automotive-Repair-Manual-Wont-Tell-You Took relay out/apart and by golly there were cracks on one of the two posts just like this person mentioned. Re-soldered both posts, shoved the secret fuel pump relay back in and voila, working again. Seems a bit too easy . . . this Nissy is a fighter and rarely lets me off this easy. I'll keep my fingers crossed . . . Thanks for all the ideas guys. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Excellent info. Yes I know of this little sucker! Not in any wiring diagrams but is described in the '84 FSM that I have. There is a flow diagram to show the conditions needed to get it running and keep it running. But does not give any diagnostic info for testing operation.<_< It's a great idea to have this relay as it shuts off the pump if the oil pressure drops to 5-8 lb where the red light would come on.
