Turn the motor clockwise and all the slack will move to the passenger side as the crank sprocket pulls down on the driver's side of the chain. If the Teflon or whatever plastic is off it ain't going to get any better. That guide set needs changing. The chain is going to chew into that guide over time. It's never going to get quiet.

Looks like the guide is snapped off. It's the top long straight guide below the KA24E timing set lettering in white. Its for a Z24 but only the chain length is different from the Z22.

Non interference???? This usually refers to the valves at full lift not physically being able to hit the piston top at TDC. An interference motor that breaks a timing belt or chain risks an open valve hitting a piston and being bent or damaging the piston, or both.. Pretty sure the L and Z series are interference motors. Larger valves and higher lift cams make this even more so.

Oddly enough, I had a mistype and actually meant that it IS an interference motor (ie:self destructs if the timing chain/belt breaks).. but I have heard from multiple people that the Z22 is a NON-interference motor, so hence my confusion. I am going to start tearing her down anyways, but appreciate all of the input..

the answer:

the L and Z series are interference motors.

are you rebuilding?

the chain guides could be replaced w/o pulling the head/motor

my L20b went ~25K w/a wasted timing set.

huge mess when i eventually pulled it, but it ran fine

You mean that if the timing chain should snap will open valves hit the piston tops? Definitely and with disastrous results. Just take any Z head and turn the cam. I don't know about the exhaust valves but the larger diameter intakes will lift well above the head surface.
