racerx
I have a 71 510 and noticed this noise lately. When I changed gears, I hear like a clunking noise from the rear, I am thinking it's my axle and maybe part of the IRS. Not sure...does anyone know or have an idea what it could be. If I do change the u-joints, how many are they and how much do they cost. If I have shop do it, how much do they charge? RacerX Quote Link to comment
sssr20det510
depends on the shop, i would get under there and check the u-joints and the bushings Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
most like its a U joint. Schucks aNapa sell the Jap made GMB brand u joints from 12-15 $ There OK the USA ones are the best but 40$ a pc is a bit much. Jack up rea of car and go under there. take one tire and move it back and forth on both sides. Look closely at the U joints. see if you see slop. You need to get seom thin wrenches so you can get near the diff ones and get at the bolts from top and botton and turn the wheel soemtimes. I some time sjam a big screw driver on the oppside end to brack the nuts first. I have the machine shop replace my U joints but I have spare half shafts also already done so I just swap them in. fix the bad one later. Quote Link to comment
racerx
Is it difficult to change them out...if I do what are the steps. Never done this ever in any of the cars I've had. And I've had a lot of cars. Quote Link to comment
