Engine grounds

SRSANDS

Recommended Posts

Im am bored today and I have to run some grounds on the VG. I got a fatty from the block to the frame rail, and a small braided one from the starter to the other frame rail. Where else would one suggest I add more? Is a intake manifold to firewall ground necessary? I just want to make sure I have enough through out the bay as I have heard strange horror stories of electrical current doing wierd shit and also frying the ecu.........

You can never have too many grounds. You need a ground from the battery to body, and from body/battery to engine. Just think of how much current is going TO the engine, and the fact that it will have to return to the battery. So, that means you need a engine to battery ground that is at least as large as your starter cable. You also could use another ground for your engine controls, ecu, ignition etc. If you don't have enough grounds, then yes you can get failures like electrons trying to use your throttle cable as a ground. Remember also that any ground attached to the body needs to be cleaned of paint prior to bolting it to the body.

You just need the one wire from the body to the engine, that's it. When people start throwing a zillion ground wires on their cars it means they have another problem that needs to be addressed. The entire engine is one giant chunk of metal, and it's all connected with bolts, so one ground is fine. On my VG30 I have a single fatty braided ground cable going from the chassis to the pass side engine mount, that's it, works perfectly.
