this info wrote up by Datzenmike awhile back...

A '73 or any 620 up until Aug. '74 were all PL 620s. The P means an L16 or L18 motor. From Sept. '74 to Jan. '76 they were all HL620s, H meaning they came with L20B motors. The earliest you could have the Delux or King Cab option was from Feb. '76 and it was designated a KHL 620.

P mean Power engine

H means High engine.

P is larger than H but it depends on the model year. In the early years, L16 and L18 were the largest engines offered, hence P. But later only the L20B was only one size up from the base engine, hence H. And the largest was SD22 which was the R620 (offered in Japan in late 1978). I haven't read what R stands for.

NOTE: In USA we only got one engine for a given year, but the Nissan code system covers all engines available worldwide.
