620 steering box leak

the 78 is leaking BAD out of the steering box. how hard is it to R&R it?? i really need to reseal it bad. has anyone had one of these boxes crack??

Yes I had one apart. (shudder)

 

Is it leaking down at the bottom where the pitman are splines on?

I've pulled one out.

 

It's a pain, as you have to take the whole steering column out at the same time. I managed to get one out with the engine still in by pulling the radiator and grille and going out the front, but I didn't much care what I did to the core support as I was doing a cab swap.

I've also droped them out the bottom,and pulled thru the top, remove cover plate on firewall this will give more room and good luck getting pitman off !! I've change many and just put another one in.

If leaking just above the pitman arm it's a bad sector shaft seal, Nissan pt.# 48137 36700. Can be replaced in the truck but the pitman arm must come off. Leave the steering linkages attached to the other end of the arm.

its leaking not only at the pitman arm but at the point the column goes into the box itsself. what a pita. thanks for the parts # mike!

Odd... do you have the proper oil in it, no additives?

no additives. amd i assume the proper oil. my FSM states GL4. thats what i filled it with. but by now it has most likely leaked out.
