  1. Will,

Great photo's of the car driving across the country, that is so cool that your Dad went with you. Those are the kind of memories that last a lifetime.

So the car is back on the west coast, interesting......

Yeah, West Coast! The 710 survived two New York years without turning to rusty dust. I'm hoping I can stay out here for keeps. I was actually hoping to install the 160J front before I got on the road out west, but I just ran out of time.

  2. What neighborhood is that, Williamsburg? Beware of Datsun thieves in Brooklyn, I lost my first 510 there in '84.

Yup! Williamsburg - I lived two blocks south of the Graham Ave L-train stop. ...kinda sketchy, but the only trouble I had was when someone with a trailer hitch backed into the bumper. Other than that, I was only getting offers to buy the car left under the windshield wiper, and seeing the car used in impromptu photo shoots since there is a place that teaches photography two blocks away.

  3. uff a very good car like mine is a good project haha more pictures please ............. and how did you get the weatherstripping ................... greetings from mexico

The weatherstripping is from a place in Los Angeles - here's the info:

    Here's what you'll need:

2 - 18" pieces of E401 (they were about 8 dollars each when I bought them.)

And here's the place that sold me the weatherstripping:

    J & J Auto Fabrics Inc.

  4. All in all it survived okay - the worst was when the clutch slave cylinder blew out in Indiana and I accidentally disconnected the throwout bearing arm when I was checking it out. Luckily it died within walking distance of a place to get a jack and an Autozone that could get me a new slave cylinder the same day.

...also I really really need to get the ZX front struts into this car - the front tires are wearing out on their inside edges and the struts dampen nothing. The thing was steering on its own whenever I drove on grooved concrete roads.

...aaaand the ignition lock cylinder slipped 180 degrees out of place, so I could turn the engine on, but I couldn't shut it off. For the last day of the trip I needed to pull the plug on the ignition switch to turn the car off.

  5. Woah. no posts for half a year? ...time for an update!

I'm still driving the 710 - I just finished driving cross-country to move to the bay area yesterday.

Up in Syracuse I had a chance to wash all of the Brooklyn out of my car:

No more junk in my trunk

The bumper has been dropped off at the chrome shop, so this 4x6 will need to do for now. Full-on park bench.

My taillight had become a fish tank, so I popped it apart, cleaned out the old waxy glue with a scraper and then some goo-gone, and wire brushed the sockets. With some dielectric grease on the bulbs and some clear silicone to hold the lens on it was working again.

  6. Oh, and it looks like the 74 610 hardtop has just about the same bumper brackets as the 74 710 hardtop. It'll be pretty easy to bring them in a few inches - just wear safety glasses - I believe that the contents are under pressure.

  7. Hey will, tach works awesome, thanks.

    No problem!

...now I just gotta install that dash pad. It's been waiting for the gauge cluster to be finished this whole time. (it's almost done. almost.)

  8. Think I've had it 3 years, 2 for sure. Had to disconnect the speedo and remove the complete instrument cluster with radio and clock... what a bitch. Clam shell off and unbolted the steering column for room.

I ran a wire from it to the coil (everything else was plug 'n pay) and just now realized that there may have been a wire taped up in the harness.  Never even looked. Oh well.

Sounds like it's time to track down a second 710 tach. You'll be the only 710 at Canby with a two-tach gauge cluster.

  9. Bolt the chain to the block through the manifold bolts - or if the head is gone, maybe through the cylinder head bolts. If the chain isn't bolted the block will be likely to slip and fall and cause you major trouble. AutoZone and probably other car part stores will loan you a lifting chain for free.

  10. I used to work at a store that sold old model cars, and we'd use pine-sol to strip paint off of the old cars without hurting the plastic. It's gentle enough to not hurt ancient styrene.

Nice to know it can help me avoid brain-melting carb cleaner too.

  11. must be a lurker 'cause he deleted the ad  :poop:

I called the guy to talk about the car, since it was for sale when I bought my car almost 2 years ago - the owner seems kinda nutty. Every time it pops up for sale, the price rises. I think the wife asked him to sell the car, and he doesn't want to sell it, so he's posting with a price to guarantee that it won't sell

  12. It's pretty much just cardboard - that"s why they disappear!

Anyone got a decent picture of the back dash in their coupe? Mine didn't come with the back dash board so I'm gonna have to resort to making one I just wanna be as close to the oem style as possible.... And prob gonna throw some rocking a$$ 6x9s back there just like any god ole boy woulda done back in the 70s...lol
  13. yeah i told ya that carb needs to be played with... and did you put a choke cable on it?

Yup - It has a choke cable - I don't think I could get it started without one!

I'm surprised at how much different this engine sounds compared to the L16 that was in the car before. Plus the clutch that I had before was new, but this one connects way sooner than the previous one when I release the pedal.
