Rod bearings don't go bad sitting for 3 hours. You would have heard them while coming home. Check your most recent work done on it. Oil level? Distributor replaced? is it loose or broken? Broken or loose spark plug in the hole? Plug wire off, coil wire off? Points?
oil level fine, distrib is new all good, belts are new, alternator fine , noise is coming from the engine, checked the plugs ngkbp6es all new all fine , the noise has to be a crank Issue or bearing
-
i will pull the plugs wed and see what happens... also i have a new filter for my 620 truck , and i will put it on ... I have a back up engine its a L20 with 0nly 35,000 miles on it , But i really dont want to do a motor swap cause its such a pain in the ass
-
so i was working on 610 today and installed some new pugs , wires , new distributor, a new weber 32/36, i changed the oil and got it all tuned up , point gap , and timing spot on.... start it up go for a ride get it up to 50 mph , turn around come home shut it of.... I go to start it 3 hrs later and there is a massive Knocking noise from the engine.. cank..cank..cank..cank..cank...cank...
so i shut it off.... its a L20 B with who knows how many miles .... its sat in my barn for 6 years and not driven or started... In the last year i have only driven it 2x.... there is no smoke from the tail pipe when it runs... So bad Crank ? Cracked Piston ? what say you
So if i pull the head what should i look for? , Or just pull the oil pan and look for chunks of metal ..?.

Crack ,
The link those guys gave you to Z therapy are $650. for basically brand new carbs,, they call them rebuilt but they replace and in the case of the throttle shafts, improve them.
My son ( FAT510 in post up there^^ ) bought a pair of working SUs that are on his car right now for $120. bucks or something like that without air cleaners.
I don't know anything about SUs but no matter how much research i/we did putting them on and fiddling with them was way more informative than any info i have saved into my favorites.. You can dis-assemble almost every thing you will need to,, even with them on engine.
my only issue with these SU carbs is the syncing of them and getting them dialed in .... i run a weber on my 620 truck and its flawless when it comes to performance, it been on my truck now for like 10 years and still going strong ...
-
what about Dave Carrol ? there is a guy up in arlington or stanwood that is a datsun mechanic , he owns a SSS 510 with a Fj motor in it ... i think his son is running the shop on his property ... but i can remember his name
-
Those look like factory Datsun 510 SSS carbs. Twin Hitachi (su type).
With manifold and that nice air cleaner, maybe $350.
ouch I think i payed 5 to 600 from the guy in california for these , and i have the air filter horn things, i was told on the phone that these can go for around 1700 rebuilt ? Or the guy was on crack

what does a set up like this sell for these days ?

so these are my carbs that i want to throw on my 1975 datsun 610... they have been in a box for 12 years, i have called around to have them rebuilt and found the estimates from 900.00 and up... So here is my question.. Who do you know or recommend to rebuild them in the king , snohomish area ? OR do i just sell them and buy a weber 32/36 ...

code wont paste correctly ...
-
i would say the carb is the issue.... my first thoughts were firing order, as i have put the plugs on the distrib cap the wrong way and my truck would not fire at all... then i realized I had the wires on the wrong holes for the cap.. if you spray starting fluid in the carb and it fires right up, then id throw on a webber 32 36 ..
-
300 for everything. I need money to save my mustang..
wish that car was here in washington... id buy the whole thing
-
-
I would love to learn how from the pro's here on the forum , Please PM me so i can learn the in and out of my webber.. thanks everyone, im in the North end
-
its a great parts car for sure, but as i am a 610 owner, its really , really hard to get any parts for 610 these days... esp a Hood ... I also would buy it , but i have no way to get it up to washington..
-
i have a webber question ? who would you recommend in the seattle / eastside area to rebuild a webber 32 /36 and put new jets in it ?
-
i got the fuel pump here
I have the cam sprocket set on 1 , as soon as i have some miles on the engine im going to switch it over to either notch 2 or 3 ..
I have had no problem with exhaust leaks on the shorty header ... its a snug fit
as for the carb , I do have a set of SU's , but they wont clear the brake booster on the 620 truck ... and i like the webber so far , a cannon intake would be nice , but they are hard to find...
as for the cam , i sent a stock one down to top end performace and they did a a mild grind .. its a 480 sumthn sumthn .. its not a high lift cam , just a mild one ..
one thing i do need help on is wiring my MSD tach adapter to the stock tach ? anyone lead me to that thread ?
-
Nice looking KC glad to see it back together rather than sold in pieces. How much better did it run than when it was stock?
I havent driven a stock truck in a long long time... As far as this engine goes in the truck, I have got 2 solid days now driving it from lake stevens to Kent, and today all over to edmonds and the eastside... Its alot of fun on the freeway when i can stomp on it and get the webber to open op both Barells of the carb, there is alot of mid torq, but nothing from a dead start.. Id really like to build a Nap Z frankenstein block with an L20 head , Im also wondering If an SU set up would provide more HP than the webber 32 /36 .. Or maybe a Cannon Intake manifold VS a the stock one ...
-
nice job man
Thank you ... I got to take it down the freeway today, and Fill it up with some Gas, its really nice to Be in my Datsun truck again.. Now i need to do some interior work and install new carpets , and new Led dash Lights with a dimmer switch..

any one seen a truck at a local junk Yard in the snohomish pull aparts or king county ??
-
No... I can arrange a tow
-
Any one else have a set up idea.. ? Or should I just leave the tube wide open like before.. ? I dont want to run it into my intake ,as I would guess that would suck oil into my valves and the tops of my pistons
-
I am looking for a truck bed for my 76 king cab 620 truck.. Mine is rusted out beyond bondo and welding... let me know if you have or know of a dead truck with a good bed... I'm in the seattle area..

Valve cover is fine, towers and cam look fine , springs and retainer clips all there ..I dont post much here do to people being .......... , ive owned datsuns since 1984...So this isnt my first issue with a L20
why am i a Bad owner ? i cant predict a engine .... im just asking for advice , and trouble shooting my car ... you choose to opt in or opt out here ...
So i did the spark plug thing , no change in noise .... the last time i heard this noise was on my truck , the bolts came Loose on the fly wheel and the flywheel was the culprit..
I am just going to pull the engine and throw in my back up , Im taking down my head to autosport this week and have them do a port and polish with a valve job.. Im prob going to throw on a shorty header also and re do the exhaust...
anyone have a shorty for a 610 ? if not then i will order one from topend performance for 190.00
