Description

Rare 1969 ½ model manufacturer in December, 1969. First licensed in California in 1970. Rare round side fender circular reflectors that preceded the rectangular running lights in later models.

I am the second owner. I bought this truck in 1972 with 40k miles. I drove it (mostly freeway) for 200k miles, then replaced the engine with a Japanese surplus engine in 1978. The current engine has 200k miles. The original engine was in good running condition when I replaced it. On that engine I installed a Hooker Header. The original (spare) engine comes with the truck.

Original transmission and differential in good working condition.

Runs great. Meticulously maintained. I have invested over $8k in the restoration: new brake system, tires, upholstery, patina gloss coat restoration, carburetor, etc. Lots of extras, spare wheels, original radio, etc.

Mostly original throughout. Most of the photographs were taken in October at the Route 66 Reunion car show in Ontario, California.

This truck was my first and has much sentimental value. Difficult decision to sell it, but with 6 other pickups it’s time to pass it along to a Datsun lover who will appreciate what I have preserved.

The first PL521 with the L16 engine was July of '69. With a car number 180,071. All PL521s after July of '69 would be a '70 model year.

By Jan '70, 169,929 PL521s, ending with car number 350,0000, had been built or roughly 693 per day on a three shift 5 day work week.

A December made PL521 truck would have a car number (again very roughly) between 348,614 and 349,307. The Car Number Plate is fixed to the cowling just behind and above the engine valve cover. The bottom line is the car number.

Rectangular marker lights were installed on October '69 trucks. I don't have the monthly production numbers for the PL521 but by the end of September it was car number 255,904 so higher than that? I believe the build date can be found on the driver's door jam.

I had a 6 year old '71 PL521. A great truck!

Thanks for the feedback.

Actually, my truck as you can see in the photos has circular reflectors, not lights. The rectangular side fender lights appeared in California in 1970 after recent legislation required them. I've only seen one other ever with the circular reflectors. Very rare.

Your build date should fall between July and September to have round reflectors. December may be the date it was registered.

Nope. Manufacture date 12.69 right on the vin steel plate on the door jam…
