'Nother Noob question: L20- intake manifold options?

I've had limited success searching for the answer to this question-

(-feel free to call me names for not being able to search things properly! :P)

I Just pulled the L20b from the donor truck (79 620) and am cleaning it up to

drop it into the 521...

First, now I understand what everyone is bitching about as far as removing the L20

intake and exhaust manifolds!!!

I had to pull the head just to access the bottom bolts because of the stupid heat

shield and smog crap !!!!

phew!

anywhoo- the intake has a smog doohickey attached to the side and so does the exhaust (tubes running through each manifold head to a connecting rail).

I've seen pics of the exhaust mani, where people have just cut and pinched off

the tubes...

...just look at all that crap!

my question is: will intake manifolds from L16, L18,ect... work for the L20, or are they different diameters?

I'm almost positive they're all round-port.

Also, is there a exhaust manifold from any of the years that didn't come with

smog crap, that would also fit on the round-port L20?

thanks!

I had a exhaust manifold like that. I soaked it in PB blaster for a couple of days and then took off the emmisions stuff. I got some 19mmx 1.5inch bolts and stuck in the holes where the tubes went. Then I cut off the heads of the bolts and ground it down smooth. You would never even know they were there!

Any ideas about what to do about all the crap on the intake?

I have it some love with the BFH, and it doesn't budge!

If I get it off, I wonder if there is a huge hole i'll have trouble covering...

Maybe better to leave it all on, and just block off all the ports?

Go get one of those little propane torches from lowes or home depot and wear some thick leather gloves.

Did you break the bolts/studs that hold the EGR crap on? I used a short piece of oak/hardwood and a 5 pound sledgehammer and beat the hell out of it when it was hot. Took a bit of work but I got it. You could always put it in a vise and use a sawzall too...

hehe sawzall.....:D

Yeah, i busted all the bolts loose, hammered on it a bit-

didn't want to give it too much and break something right off the bat-

But, yeah, the torch is next!

thanks

Yes the L 18 & 16 intakes will bolt up. The L 18 will also have smog devices on it but its not as cluttered as the L 20 one. The L 16 unit has 1 port that i plugged [on end under carb]...

We have a few L 16 intakes available here if your interested...Ratsun priced of course.

I may have to take you up on a clean L16 Mani-

I could use the on that's on the L16 on the truck now-

but I'd like to keep that motor complete.

You said you plugged the port under the carb?

Do you mean the coolant port?

If so- did you have to block off the ports to the head also? (and, how?)

THanks! (pm me about price on mani!)
