Nissan 720 Transmission removal

Recommended Posts

Hi sorry if this has already been asked couldn't find it anywhere else on the forum, I have a 4x4 84 nissan 720 4x4 and it looks like a pain to drop the transmission out. I have to remove the engine and tranny so I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to just pull them both out of the top with an engine crane. Thanks

Also any info out there on tranny rebuilds/reconditioning and parts/seals around? I haven't seen much out there online, IK I could just replace it but would be nice to try and rebuild it.

I've dropped the transmission on my 85 4x4 a few times and it is a pain, but it's doable. Yanking the motor and tranny together is definitely the preferred method. There's a good write up in the old Dime Quarterly with step by step instructions on rebuilding - check out Vol. 11 Issues 2 and 3 here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1vg5gUButsNeoYHv737nzCO32lgiMwh_a. There's also series of videos on Youtube showing the complete disassembly and reassembly of a 71B that helped during my first rebuild. First video is here, and you can find the rest on that page - <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTdf7ncLy0A>.

Almost all the rebuild kits will be for the FS5W71C but yours should be a FS5W71B, the only real difference being the smaller 56 mm front counter-shaft bearing on the 71B. All the synchros and other bearings should be the same but someone else will correct me if I'm wrong

Just checked and looks like I used this rebuild kit for my 85 - https://transpartswarehouse.com/bk133ws-nissan-truck-trans-fs5w71c-2wd-5-sp-transmission-rebuild-kit-84-6-86.html. Once you pull the transmission, measure to see if you have the 56 mm or 62 mm countershaft bearing. This kit comes with a 62 mm so you'd need to source the 56 separately if needed
