J63L transmission gears relation

Recommended Posts

Hi, I got a J63 transmission and disassembled it to rebuild, so I took the time to count the teeth and figure out the relation of each compared to a ordinary F4w63

J63:

36 15

30 21

27 29

20 33

F4W63:

36 14

31 20

26 27

20 33

As I can see 4th are the same but the rest vary so, what you guys think? What advantage shows one over the other?

There are no gears involved with 4th. Fourth is a straight connection between clutch and drive shaft.

33/20 are the first gears on the mainshaft and the countershaft below it. 33/20 is 1.65 and applied to all forward gears (with the exception of 4th)

36/15 is most likely 1st gear so 2.4 X 1.65 (the input gears that are common to all forward gear) making first a 3.96 ratio

30/21 = 1.42 X 1.65 = 2.35 2nd

27/29 = 0.93 X 1.65 = 1.53 3rd

Fourth gear is always 1 to 1 or 1.00

1st... 3.96

2nd.. 2.35

3rd... 1.53

4th... 1.00

First gear in the J13/L16 powered 521 is 3.657, same as the 510 wagon. The sedan is 3.382* first.

* This is accomplished by varying the 33/20 gear set at the front of the transmission.

But compared to the f4w looks like 1st 2nd and 3rd are faster in the 63L?
